We have to announce the heartbreaking news that our exceptional Louise Walsh has died having had a catastrophic brain haemorrhage.
For many reasons, and having given this much consideration, there will be no relay, grand finale, or party this year. Amy will refund any ticket purchases over the coming weeks. However, what we do want is to honour Lou through her passion to raise as much money as possible each year. This year is no different. We have the BLR shop full of wonderful merchandise that can be found under the ‘Shop’ tab from August bank holiday Monday. Although there will be no relay we are sure she would like you all to ‘go spotty’, wear your merchandise and pull out all the stops to raise lots. Get those spots sponsored, wear your hoodies and Ts, and fly your flags in support of her. We would love to see what you are doing to raise money this year and nothing is off the cards (as long as it is legal!). You are welcome to be inventive, hold a quiz night, and do anything to get the donations flooding in. Splash it all over social media and tag us in your efforts. It just leaves me to say a massive thank you for everything you have given to BLR over the years. Lou was adamant that BLR was not about her but was about all of you. She loved you all for your ongoing commitment to her crazy idea that began 10 years ago.
In brief, The Big Learner Relay was an annual event involving 100's of Driving Instructors and pupils raising money for BBC Children in Need.
To relay a Pudsey top box (the kind that driving instructors have on the roof of their driving school cars) from one driving lesson to the next, 3000 miles around the country in 12 days.
Fundraise, donate, and of course, go spotty Have a look under the 'Instructor Section' of how you can get involved. Car spots and other merchandise can be purchased through the 'Shop' tab.
The Big Learner Relay is not possible without the extra help and support from some very special people. In particular, my husband Blaine Walsh who is also my best friend and fellow ADI. Thank you for having faith in my crazy idea eight years ago. Also Amy Cullen who is my sister and business partner – for dedicating her time and efforts to co-ordinating the massive logistical task of organising each year’s BLR. Also a special thank you to our supporters whose logo’s you can see below. Last but not least, thank you to YOU for getting involved and supporting this great cause for Children In Need.
